The partnership between Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) and the California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) began as a bold, shared vision to expand medical education, improve access to healthcare, and grow the physician workforce for the Inland Empire. It was recognized that building a medical school alongside a public teaching hospital would provide the opportunity to educate future physicians while serving one of California’s most diverse communities. With San Bernardino County’s support, the vision became a reality, and the nascent partnership continues to transform healthcare across our county.

Today, that vision is in full swing. Each day, CUSM students learn alongside ARMC’s physicians and practitioners, gaining valuable experience in a high-acuity, mission-driven teaching environment. As ARMC has evolved into a leading academic and tertiary-care medical center and CUSM has achieved full accreditation and has continued to grow, our partnership has strengthened both institutions.

Together, we are advancing clinical education and research opportunities, attracting top physician leaders, and creating a pipeline of talented physicians who are often choosing to build their careers right here in the Inland Empire. What inspires me most about this partnership is not only what we have accomplished together, but what lies ahead. We have an opportunity to improve health outcomes for generations to come while addressing some of our region’s greatest healthcare challenges.

We are incredibly grateful to California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) for its commitment to inspiring, empowering, and preparing the next generation of physicians and healthcare leaders, beginning with our students here in San Bernardino County. The incredible work CUSM is leading is not only opening doors for students who may have never considered a future in medicine but is also cultivating homegrown talent that will one day serve our communities. Our family was inspired to support California University of Science and Medicine because its mission reflects the values that have guided our lives and work serving underserved communities. As our daughter pursues her medical education at CUSM, we have been impressed by the university’s commitment to training physicians dedicated to service, equity, and community health. We are proud to support CUSM’s research and educational mission and its impact on future generations.

My initial contact with CUSM came about through working with student volunteers at homeless clinics, some as far away as San Diego. Their dedication piqued my curiosity about the university and eventually led to a part-time faculty opportunity. I have taught medical students for forty years at a variety of institutions, and find the collegiality, personal interest, and dedication of CUSM’s faculty and staff to the success of their students to be unmatched. Our students are intellectually curious and genuinely motivated to make a difference in their community through medicine. My wife Lisa and I are happy to support the mission of CUSM.

House of Bread was inspired to give by the warm and welcoming community found at CUSM. Each member does such vital work to support healing and hope, nurturing the dreams of learners, and contributing to the strength of our shared future. It is truly a joy to help in their service!
